 Candle FAQs

  • While we haven’t let one burn completely from start to finish, an 8-ounce soy candle typically burns for approximately 40 to 50 hours. The exact burn time can vary based on factors such as wick size, candle container, and burning conditions. We wont name names, but one of our past customers reported accidentally leaving a candle burning all weekend (>48 hours)

  • Wood wicks can be difficult and require some specific care. Using the tips below should keep your candle burning strong!

    1. Trim the Wick
Keep the wood wick trimmed to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch before each burn. This prevents excessive flickering, smoking, and soot buildup.

    2. Burn Time
Allow the candle to burn long enough each time so the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar. This helps avoid tunneling and ensures an even burn.

    3. Avoid Drafts
Place your candle away from vents, fans, or open windows. Drafts can cause the wood wick to burn unevenly or produce excess smoke.

    4. Keep Clean
Remove any debris or leftover wick fragments before every new burn to maintain a clean flame.

    5. Extinguishing
Use a snuffer or gently blow out the flame to avoid damaging the wick. Avoid dipping the wick in wax as it can lead to sticking and reduced burn time.

    6. Cool and Store Properly
Allow the candle to cool and solidify before relighting. Store candles in a cool, dry area.

  • Many people don’t know, but using essential oils in candles can pose several problems that may affect both the quality and safety of the candle. First essential oils often have a lower “flash point” compared to fragrance oils, meaning they can ignite and catch fire at lower temperatures, increasing the risk of fire hazards when burned in a candle. Additionally, essential oils may not blend well with candle wax, leading to inconsistent scent throw—either too weak when the candle is lit or overpowering when unlit. For these reasons, we mix specially formulated fragrance oils (designed for candles) to ensure better quality for our customers.

  • We use a soy wax blend for a more natural, clean candle.

  • Each clay jar is hand thrown by Brandon on the pottery wheel. He uses 2 different clay bodies (white and brown) which swirl together as he throws them to create the mixed look. No two jars are the same!

  • Absolutely! Once the candle is burned, each jar is just like any other piece of Brandon’s pottery. We recommend washing the jar under hot water to remove any excess wax and easily pop out the metal wick-clip.

All jars are food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe.

  • At Hoffman Clay Works LLC, we understand the value of sustainability and appreciate your interest in a candle refill program. The jars take ~2 weeks to make and we would love for them to be something you can reuse over and over!

While we do not have an official refill program in place at this time, we are actively exploring options to make refills available in the future. Please stay connected with us on social media for updates as we work toward creating convenient and small business friendly solutions for our hand-made pottery candle jars.
